What is the MG Walk?

The MG Walk is the signature fundraising campaign for the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA). The MG Walk provides hope for the thousands of families who face the challenges caused by myasthenia gravis (MG). In the weeks leading up to the MG Walk, participants are encouraged to fundraise by talking about MG and how it affects those living with MG, and also their families, friends, careers and all aspects of their lives. These conversations shed light on what MG is, and the need for the MGFA to receive vital funding for programs to find a world without myasthenia gravis.

How is the money used?

The money raised through the MG Walk is used for research to find a cure for myasthenia gravis and closely related disorders, improve treatment options, and provide support for people with myasthenia gravis through community programs and advocacy. How do I register?

Click here to register. On the top, left corner, select the MG Walk that you wish to attend in the drop down box labeled “Select Your Walk”. Once your MG Walk location is selected, you may choose to create a new team, join an existing team or register as an individual or volunteer. Once one of the four options are selected, click on the “Continue to Registration Form” button to fill out your contact information and complete your registration. If you would prefer to register over the phone, please call the MG Walk Office at 1-855-MG-WALKS (1-855-649-2557). 

How much does it cost to participate in an MG Walk?

Participating in an MG Walk is FREE. However, we always encourage all of our attendees to try and fundraise. Every dollar gets us one step closer to the ultimate finish line, a world without myasthenia gravis! 

Once you get started, you’ll find it’s easy and fun. There are MG Walk tools available to help you every step of the way! They can be found on our Start Fundraising page. 

What do the different registration types mean?

MG Walk attendees can choose to register as a Team Captain, Team Member an Individual or Volunteer.

A TEAM CAPTAIN is the leader of their MG Walk team. They recruit family, friends, co-workers and community members to join them on event day and help raise funds for their team. The Team Captain manages both their personal fundraising page and the team fundraising page, editing the content and team goal. The Team Captain also receives an email from the MG Walk office after they register with important resources to help maximize their recruitment and fundraising efforts.  If you are interested in promotional items, please contact the MG Walk office. Lastly, the Team Captain is the main contact for the MG Walk staff. 

A TEAM MEMBER is an important part of the MG Walk team. They are recruited by the Team Captain to help spread awareness and raise important funds for their team. Team members can manage their personal fundraising page, editing their story and setting their fundraising goal. Team members also receive important resources to help maximize their recruitment and fundraising efforts from the MG Walk Office through e-mail. 

An INDIVIDUAL is someone interested in supporting the MG Walk, but plans to attend on their own. An individual manages their personal fundraising page, editing their story and setting a fundraising goal. Individuals also receive important resources to help maximize their recruitment and fundraising efforts from the MG Walk Office through e-mail. All individual registrants have the option to become a Team Captain or join a team at any time. The MG Walk Office can also assist in helping individuals find a team to join! A VOLUNTEER is someone that wishes to help with different aspects of the MG Walk prior to or on the day of the event.  Volunteering could mean helping mark the route, setting up or tearing down the event, recruiting local sponsors and participants, helping with registration, handing out refreshments and several other activities.  If you are interested in volunteering, please register through the site or contact the MG Walk Office at or 1-855-MG-Walks (1-855-649-2557).

What is the difference between a “Personal Goal” and a “Team Goal”?

Your PERSONAL GOAL is how much you’d like to raise on your own. Your team goal is the total amount your team would like to raise (add each team member’s goal together to get your team goal). 

TEAM GOAL: If you are on a team, the Team Captain sets a goal for you and your team members. Say you’d like your team of six participants to raise $10,000. You believe you can raise $5,000 on your own, so that becomes your personal goal. Your remaining five team members would each need to set a $1,000 personal goal. These numbers are flexible depending on your expectations and your team size. 

What if there is not an MG Walk in my area? Can I still participate?

Absolutely! If we are not hosting an MG Walk in your area, we highly recommend starting your own walk in your neighborhood as a DIY or join the virtual walk.  You’ll have access to a free online fundraising participant center, receive all of the important resources to help maximize your fundraising and recruitment efforts, and the MG Walk Office is always available to answer questions. 

What happens after I register for the MG Walk?

Once you complete the online fundraising form, you will receive an e-mail with the login information for your participant center. We strongly recommend logging in and updating your personal fundraising page with pictures and your connection to MG. I’m walking and my family will join me. Should they register for the MG Walk?

Yes. All walkers, regardless of age, must register to participate in the MG Walk. This is for insurance purposes. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in making sure every member of your team is registered!

Can my child participate in the Walk?

The Walk is for all ages! With a little help from an adult, children have the potential to be great fundraisers! We made updates to the online registration form to make the process for registering children easier!

Can I register for the MG Walk the day of the event?

Yes, you can register for the MG Walk on event day however, due to covid protocols that will be in place, we do encourage all attendees to register for the MG Walk online in advance especially so that you can take advantage of the great fundraising resources we offer! Plus, you’ll skip the lines at registration because you won’t have to complete any paperwork. However, for those that don’t register prior to the walk, we will have paper registration forms for attendees to complete at the MG Walk. When you arrive at the MG Walk, go to the registration table for further directions. 

How long is the Walk route?

The MG Walk offers a 1-mile and 3-mile walk route. Locations vary, so please check your local MG Walk website for specific details. Please remember, participating in the 1-mile or 3-mile walk route is not mandatory. We still encourage anyone to attend the MG Walk even if they do not want to participate in the actual walk. There is plenty to do at the MG Walk, and you are guaranteed to have a great time!

What if it rains?

The MG Walk is rain or shine. If there is rain in the forecast, please make sure to dress accordingly. If there are dangerous weather conditions expected, the MG Walk Office will provide an update through email, social media, posting on the local MG Walk website and calling the Team Captains. 

How can my company match my donation?

Every company has its own requirements for matching gifts. Check with your Human Resources Department and ask for information on matching gifts. Follow the instructions provided by your company, and submit all paperwork in a timely fashion. If possible, have the matching gift indicate your name and the MG Walk you are attending. Matching gifts can be mailed to:

Will the matching gift be displayed on my personal fundraising page?

Yes! As soon as we receive the matching gift from your company, we will post it on your personal fundraising page. 

Keep in mind, matching gifts can often take several weeks to process, so you may not see the matching gift on your fundraising page immediately. If you would like the matching gift to appear on your fundraising page as soon as you submit the paperwork, log into your personal fundraising portal and enter it as an offline donation or call the MG Walk Office and we can enter it for you!

How do I turn in donations to the MG Walk Office?

All credit card donations made online are automatically processed. All donations that you’ve collected in cash and checks need to be handed into the MG Walk Office. You can do this in two ways. First, you can complete the Donation Form and mail checks only to the MGFA at your convenience. Please be sure to write your name and the MG Walk you are attending in the memo of each check. Checks and donation forms can be mailed to:

Please do not mail cash! If you have collected cash donations and would like to mail it in, please write a personal check for that amount, get a money order to mail in or deposit the money and use your debit card to make the donation. If you mail the donations in, please make sure to indicate the donor’s name and how much they donated so we can properly enter their donation onto your personal fundraising page. 

Due to covid protocols, we would prefer that you mail in or turn cash donations into an online donation prior to the event.  Accepting donations at the event is tentative currently.  We will update the site at a later date with additional information.  

Who do I make checks payable to?

Please make checks payable to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America or MGFA. Please don’t forget to write your first and last name along with the MG Walk location on the memo of the check. 

How long does it take for checks to show up on my account?

Checks that are mailed in prior to the MG Walk can take up to 4 weeks to appear on your personal fundraising page. This amount of time varies based on the time of year. Any donations handed in at the MG Walk can take up to 2 weeks to appear on your personal fundraising page. To avoid the wait, you can log into your personal participant center and enter the donations as offline donations. 

Are donations tax-deductible and how do I get a receipt?

Yes. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. For credit card donations, a receipt appears as soon as the transaction is processed, and a copy is emailed to you within minutes. For check donations, a copy of your cleared check can serve as your receipt. If you made a cash donation, or would like a more detailed receipt, you can request one by emailing the MG Walk Office at or call 1-855-MG-WALK (1-855-649-2557). What should I bring to MG Walk?

Limited snack items will be provided at the MG Walk. If you have any food allergies or preferences, you are welcome to bring your own food and beverage. If we are expecting rain, consider bringing a rain jacket and umbrella. Most importantly, be sure to bring any cash or check donations to turn in. 

Are pets, bicycles and in-line skates allowed?

Bicycles and in-line skates are not allowed at any of the MG Walks. Pets are allowed at most MG Walk locations, but please check with the MG Walk Office before the event to confirm that your MG Walk location allows pets. Please consider that not everyone is comfortable with pets, many people are allergic, and many animals react differently in large crowds than they do at home before making the decision to bring your pet to your MG Walk. 

When do I get my MG Walk T-shirt?

The official MG Walk t-shirt will be mailed to those that raise $100 30 days prior to their walk date as part of your MG Walk Day outfit.  Please refer to the Prize page for more information.   

How do I obtain my incentives?

All fundraising incentives will be mailed to you in time for your walk based on the amount you have raised and in the system 30 days prior to your walk.  Please refer to the Prize page for more information.

Can I still attend the MG Walk if I don’t want to participate in the 1 or 3-mile walk portion?

Please remember the MG Walk is not a competition! We’re walking to celebrate people with MG and the progress we’ve made due to our fundraising. While we offer a variety of distances, it is not a requirement to participate in the walk component of the MG Walk. 

What do I wear at the MG Walk?

Fundraise and wear your Walk Day outfit!  We strongly recommend that every attendee wear comfortable walking shoes. Make sure to check the forecast so you can dress accordingly. Please keep in mind, there is no baggage check at the MG Walk. If you’re arriving from out of town, have a bag or any other bulky item, you can carry it while you walk, leave it with a loved one at the Start/Finish line or leave it in your vehicle. The MG Walk is not responsible for any lost or stolen items. 

Will food be available at the MG Walk?

We will take precautions to provide individually wrapped food if available.  However there will be water available at the MG Walk. 

Often, food and beverage items are graciously donated. If you are connected to a local business that could donate water, juice, breakfast items, or fruit, please reach out the MG Walk Office at or 1-855-MG-WALKS (1-855-649-2557). 

If you have any dietary restrictions, please plan to bring your own food and beverage.
